From Empty Airstream to Cozy Cabin--On a Dime
Here is the living/dining room area of Girl Camping Girl's big ol' Airstream, outfitted as a cozy cabin-- after a frugalista makeover.
The whole front area of the trailer had already been gutted down to the wooden subfloor. So, first step: Prime it, then paint with two coats of a good floor paint.
Next, since the original drapery was gone, too, shop the house/shop the other trailers to find window coverings that will work. Layer coordinated area rugs on the floor--acquired at a moving sale, just waiting to find a new use. Add sofa bed, donated by a relative, at front end of the room, move small table elsewhere.
Use mini electric fireplace (also a currently owned household item) for heat source and for atmosphere. Include lamp and print from thrift store, and spare armchair from the house.
Grand total: Under $200, about half of which was paint and supplies.
Which leaves enough in the wallet to spring for a good bottle of camping whiskey!
Perfect! Don't you love decorating on a dime? Bimart just got those little fireplaces in...one style is red...oh, how I want one!
ReplyDeleteThought of you often as I was painting the floor!
DeleteThat mini fireplace is the best thing I've ever gotten for a trailer, hands down. Also use it often in the house and at the cabin. Highly recommended!
I couldn't resist the Bi Mart red one, so I am now the proud owner of that little red fireplace!
DeleteMy kind of make over!!! LOVE your blog!
ReplyDeleteDon't tease us, we want more.... Inch by inch tour!!! My heart can't take itty bits! It really does look grand!
ReplyDeleteOK, does the heater plug in? I just got a 25 foot SS from my mom. I paid bucks to get new tires, brakes and wire the lights for towing. However, I haven't touched the inside. I don't know if anything works, or even how to plug it in. I'd love some heat it there.
ReplyDeleteLove YOURS!
Hi Jes, the heater does plug in. It runs on 110 current. Great little source of warmth!
DeleteHey Jes, did you figure out how to plug in your trailer? It should have a male end and plug-in cord somewhere on the outside, driver's side. You'll need to get power to the trailer before you can run anything inside.
DeleteCongrats on getting a Silver Streak!
Cool, love it when we can be frugal and beautiful all at the same time! :o)

How do you drive with all those loose things. Does the foldout bed slide around the trailer when you're going down the road? Wouldn't it scratch the floor?
ReplyDeleteThe bed doesn't move at all. I fold the round table flat and slide it under the bed. The rest of the furniture stays put very nicely.
